Spring is here and most of us can’t wait to get our yards spruced up and a fresh layer of mulch really makes your landscape stand out. Not all Mulches are the same. The best Mulch would be organic! Organic mulch is a natural wood product not rubber or plastic. Hardwood Bark Mulch has always been the standard but over the last few years companies have been grinding scrap wood, pallets, etc. and dying it. It may look nice, but it is core wood (not the bark or outer layer of the tree) and doesn’t benefit the soil. Sometimes it’s blended with green waste that could contain soft wood and that could cause fungus and pull nutrients from the soil and landscape plants. Most recommendations would be to make sure you are getting Hardwood Bark Mulch, natural color or Dyed with a food safe dye.
